Do You See What I See?

"...I see people so poor they cannot afford their own address..."

This is what I see....

I see hundreds of people, all crushed and pressed together as they roam the mall like madmen, searching for the latest gadget, latest fashion accessory, latest item that will just accumulate into that insurmountable red lettered debt they already owe Discovery. I see a sea of diverse people in the grocery store loading their carts with fat and sugar saturated foods. I see coupons and food stamps, and still not enough money to pay. I see people too rich for bank accounts. I see people so poor they cannot afford their own address. I see gold placed around someone’s neck, inside their mouth and on their ears and people dying who mined it.

I see lost looks as they scramble to and fro but get nowhere. I see wandering children, rebellious teens, and angry adults. I see them all and they don’t see me. They don’t see me because they wear their Rolex watches and are pressed for time.

I see them rush back and forth, piling in their cars only to emerge several minutes later, thankful they have survived the rush hour and all other horrific events the day held for them. I see new drivers itch to drag race. I see a child crying, a mother on the phone, a dad pounding the steering wheel. I see mothers become motherless as a motherless woman kidnaps children. I see fathers neglect their household. I see broken homes and broken families. I see people everywhere.

"...I see humanity as a statistic that is just another guinea pig for near and distant future experiments..."
"...I see humanity as a statistic that is just another guinea pig for near and distant future experiments..."

I see kids shuffling on the sidewalk. I see a man walking up and down the median holding a sign that states he lives in his car and is so hungry. I see a woman walking her dog and leaving the mess behind for the next poor soul to step in. I see a sky full of snow and rain and all sorts of natural disasters, and I see the earth full of people worrying about global warming.

I see the breaking news that takes lives. I see the reality shows that break lives. I see people not satisfied with stopping at abortion so they provide ways for euthanasia with no consequences. I see fighting and bruises and blood. I see people kill for pleasure. I see people kill for a penny. I see people wrongly accused. I see people escape from prison only to build a prison of their own. I see hospitals that refuse patients. I see airplanes that cannot fly. I see sinking boats and water engulfed houses.

I see people addicted to plastic surgery. I see women obsessed with their looks. I see people judging a person by outward appearances. i see less clothes on people and more on the shelves. I see little girls dabbling in makeup. I see a world defined by beauty. I see people that hate ugliness and fatness. I see people who love and make ugly things and being phat.

I see more dog food than baby food in the stores. I see underweight and malnourished bodies. I see people filing in long lines for all you can eat buffets. I see people more concerned about homeless dogs than homeless and parentless kids. I see numbers, not names. I see humanity as a statistic that is just another guinea pig for near and distant future experiments.

I see schools full of bombs, not books. I see a library full of noise. I see food, beverages, video games and movies but a love for books I see is missing. I see children with square eyes from sitting too close to their TV or computer. I see sports that suck the joy out of the game. I see a country that steals your dreams. I see the water deprived countries.

I see everybody hooked up to the internet. I see people from young to old talking on their cell phones. I see everybody's ears plugged in. I see bluetooths as man's best friend. I see everyone living in cyber space.

"...I see people fall out of love faster than they have fallen in love..."
"...I see people fall out of love faster than they have fallen in love..."

I see more...

I see godless churches, and hell oriented movies. I see preachers fighting their congregation from their pulpits, and religion promoting sin. I see Hollywood stars reflecting poor role model skills. I see broken dreams and endless goals. I see Christmas as a curse word. I see words become meaningless. I see people fall out of love faster than they have fallen in love. I see vows, and promises broken every day, every minute.

I see fire not just coming out of chimneys. I see firefighters commit arson. I see corrupt police officers and shows all about them. I see a failing government and citizens failing to hold the government up. I see a society full of lies. I see hatred a driving force. I see people killed in car accidents. I don’t see life sometimes. I see chaos. I see technology overtaking the world. I see people disrespecting everyone. I see racism. I see bigotry. I see prejudice. I see pride. I see no sense, not sensibilities.

I see a sex saturated generation. I see a drug induced culture. I see a man eat man world, where no one cares who is eliminated just so he or she can rise to the top. I see less hope but more avenues. I see mercy as only a part of the name of a band. I see grace only as the name of a girl. I see glory as only a patch on generic faded jeans. I see inventions that are pointless. I see pointers accusing peoples. I see mockery. I see debauchery. I see evil prevalent in every step of every life.

"...I see people disrespecting everyone. I see racism. I see bigotry. I see prejudice. I see pride. I see no sense, not sensibilities..."
"...I see people disrespecting everyone. I see racism. I see bigotry. I see prejudice. I see pride. I see no sense, not sensibilities..."

I see people hurting and no one there to help.

And then I see a mirror. I see myself in the mirror and I see so much baggage, so much sin, so much wrongdoing. I see what I want to be, but can’t. I see what others have tried to make me be. I see what others expect of me. I see my mother and my father in me. I see my life going nowhere. I see myself going everywhere. I see my life out of nowhere. I see my heart on my sleeve. I see my eyes develop tears. I see my face full of sorrow. I see my lips try to smile. I see what I could have been, if only I did see this before. I see what I am, and that is part of the endangered species of humanity. I see this and see this everyday in myself and in others.

For I see people but I cannot see one person as I have become jaded as the rest of the world. I see a mass, sea, accumulation, gathering, throng of people but I am caught up in all the hustle and bustle I don’t see the hurt. I see symptoms, not diseases. I see passengers but not people. And I realize that this is the problem with the eyesight of today.

Nobody sees other people. It’s rare to see people let their neighbor borrow a cup of sugar, or offer to mow the elderly person’s lawn. Nobody does anything for the good of the other person. Everything is done for the benefit of themselves. Myself included. Nobody does anything from the good of their heart or for altruistic reasons. Greed and money drive them. Sex ignites them and they will stop at nothing. Nothing, not even the hurt people I see, because until you are that hurt person you force yourself to deny everything except what you want. And I see all this as a sign that the human race as it once was has become an endangered species.

Love, respect, dignity; where has it gone? They are an endangered species. Marriage, mothers, fathers, obedient children; where have they gone? They are an endangered species. Purity, honor, trust; where has it gone? They are an endangered species. The belief in God. An endangered species.

And how can we get them back? How can we reach out when we don’t even know what that means anymore? Slowly I see things work out. I see myself reaching out to these endangered species as I too am one of them. I take someone’s hand to help them out of this pit, and they in turn grab the next hand, and this line continues on as such. I see this in my mind and I wonder is there time enough left to put this act of love into motion?

The way it used to be, the genuine love for a complete stranger just because they have a soul, those days are gone…or are they? The human species as it once was, as our ancestors and forefathers saw it, it is an endangered species, and on the brink of becoming extinct. So these words of mine are an extension of my arm. It is a look into the window of my soul; my eyes.

I have shown you what I see, and I wonder…..DO YOU SEE WHAT I SEE?

I see this in my mind and I wonder is there time enough left to put this act of love into motion?

"...I take someones hand to help them out of this pit, and they in turn grab the next hand, and this line continues on as such..."
"...I take someones hand to help them out of this pit, and they in turn grab the next hand, and this line continues on as such..."

Do You See What I See? Well Do You?

In conclusion I leave you with this song that has touched my heart and challenged me emotionally, physically, spiritually and mentally. The song is more than a song of pretty lyrics and background music. It is a prayer that crosses my lips daily and goes straight to God's ears.

I need His eyes, to see deeper than the outward appearances. I need His eyes to be able to love what I deem the unloveable. I need His eyes to love myself at times, and I need His eyes to see His world....

Because is there one person you can name whose eyes you can look into that does not have a soul?

And so I pray as Brandon Heath sings and demonstrates so perfectly, Lord, give me Your eyes....

Give Me Your Eyes, by Brandon Heath

Look down from a broken sky

Traced out by the city lights

My world from a mile high

Best seat in the house tonight

Touch down on the cold black top

Hold on for the sudden stop

Breath in the familiar shock

Of confusion and chaos

All those people going somewhere

Why have I never cared

(Chorus)

Give me your eyes for just one second

Give me your eyes so I can see

Everything that I keep missing

Give me your love for humanity

Give me your arms for the broken hearted

The ones that are far beyond my reach

Give me your heart for the ones forgotten

Give me your eyes so I can see

Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah

Step out on a busy street

See a girl and our eyes meet

Does her best to smile at me

To hide what's underneath

There's a man just to her right

Black suit and a bright red tie

Too ashamed to tell his wife

He's out of work, He's buying time

All those people going somewhere

Why have I never cared

(Chorus)

Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah

I've been here a million times

A couple of million eyes

Just move and pass me by

I swear I never thought that I was wrong

Well I want a second glance

So give me a second chance

To see you the way you've seen the people all along

(Chorus 2x)

Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah

Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah

This is a beautiful yet tragic hub. I don't want to see these things, but I do. I cannot turn a blind eye like some.

I know what you mean, Habee. I didn't always see these things, as I purposely locked myself away from them and like you said, turned a blind eye. But they are there as are so many other things I couldn't even begin to list. Thanks for reading it and for commenting and for NOT turning a blind eye!

Hello, hello, profile image

Hello, hello, 2 years ago

Ann, your have written a super hub. It was so well put together and followed through. Akthough the truth and it was a shocking truth. The question remains what can be done? Many people are aware of the state of their surrounding and more than willin yet somehow hopeless unable. Thank you for a great hub.

"Quill" 2 years ago

Morning Ann...touching hub as we read yes it is a world that has become all about self. Only owning or eating the latest and greatest will make you feel better today and yet what about tomorrow. I see city after city of people striving to own that little place called a home so they can work another day for the machine. Is it depressing, is it hard to push back from the table after eating three times what we really need and complain "I'am Stuffed" and pass the person by who says "I am Hungry".

This is what you see, this is what we see. I stop and wonder what God sees.

You have written a powerful hub, a hub that will open many eyes as I think we have closed them so we do not need to see anymore.

Blessings

Hello, hello, thank you so much for your comments. I depend on them so much.

Yes, unfortunately we have let this problem go so far that it seems impossible to rectify, and yet just standing there makes it even worse. It breaks my heart when I dwell on this entire subject yet I must or I can not sleep at night.

Life is unfair but I am blessed with so much I will try better to reach out!

Good morning to you to, Quill and wow...thank you so much for your wise insight and encouraging words.

You are so right on so many accounts. How often I have dined out and against my better judgement thrown away the food I could not eat, and outside the door a block away is a starving person. Starving for food and for another human touch to reach out and help them. But what do I do? I go home to all the comforts I have. It's like my mom always reminds me..."The Comforter was not sent so we could live comfortable lives, but so we could comfort others...." And so I will aim as well to reach out and offer comfort to those that are starving...

Thanks again, Quill and God bless!

Yes, I see what you see, Ann. This one is weird, but you know what I see? People at buffet restaurants who look sad and empty and are filling themselves with food instead of God.

This hub is sad but true. The lyrics to the Brandon Heath song make me think everytime I hear it. I want to see things through HIS eyes and I want to love as He loves but it seems I fail everytime. Part of it is I get so wrapped up in my own issues. Anyway, thanks for sharing this great hub.

Ann, This hub touched by heart - so sad and things so different than when I was growing up. It seems to me that since we took prayer out of schools, not even allowing a few minutes of silence, that things have steadily gone downhill in this country. God is about love. Love your neighbor as yourself. God never moves, but He gave us that choice. I like the lyrics to Brandon Heath's song. great hub.

Ann, I do see what you see. But sometimes I feel hopeless and yes feel that humanity is moving backwards. But they say all the great transformations in society came about because a handful of dedicated, passionate, and courageous people cared enough to do something about it. So let each one of us do our best. Thanks for such a moving hub.

Thanks so much for your input and comments. I agree with you so much Pamela. I remember going to school and on special occasions we had a Pastor come to pray....and that wasn't that long ago. It's scary how fast this country has changed. In God we trust? I'm not so sure. But it only takes 1 person to make change and I aim to be one of those 1 people!

I too see what you see, but I also see those who help others, touching scenes of love between Mother and child, a couple wrapped up in each other, a baby offering a sweet smile to every passer-by, a police officer comforting an accident victim, fire-fighters walking for a good cause, elderly helping youth, youth helping elderly, volunteers doing what they can for a better world and I see a bright blue sky, the sun and hope for another day.

A touching hub to be sure -- but make sure to see the entire picture.

You are absolutely right Lynda! It's so easy to be a pessimist and see only the down side of life, as I have clearly done, but the few scenes you mentioned are there too and what makes life so beautiful. I'm glad for your reminder and thanks as always for your input!

Very touching. This is a sad world that seems to further decline daily. While there is much good too, it does seems to be declining. As a kid we used to say the Pledge Of Allegiance daily in school and God wasn't a dirty word that would get you sent to the principals office.

As I write this on the radio they are talking about how a local Vegas kid got in trouble for talking about God to a friend. This isn't allowed as you may offend someone. But these kids are allowed to talk about drugs, sex and violence??? Maybe change should start in our schools? When did religion become taboo in public schools?

MyWebs profile image

That about the kid happened in a public school. I'm not all here today :/ Probably not a good day to write.

Ann Nonymous profile image

Ann Nonymous Hub Author 2 years ago

I know exactly what you mean. MyWebs...When did we stop praying in schools? Why? Who let it happen? The THEORY of Evolution is taught as the number one curriculum in science, but like you mentioned about this kid in public school, you cannot talk to God to your friend? It's scary to see how fast things have degenerated. This has to be the fastest changing century in history. And what am I doing about it?

Thanks so much for your input MyWebs and I am glad I was able to communicate my point in an understandable way....

Oh and everyday seems to be one of those good days NOT to write for me as I have this brain fog sometimes, so don't worry about it, and keep up the great work!

Hello Ann this is probably your best hub to date. It made me feel so many emotions especially sadness for humanity. Yes I see what you see and unfortunately have probably seen more than you since I know I am much older. I have seen people turned away from church because they werent wearing shoes and since that day I havent returned to church because of that. Its like that song that says would Jesus even be allowed in church these days with his bloody hair and dirty feet. Makes you think what kind of society has become. People wouldn't recognize if he was staring them in the face. But I totally know what you mean and Im sorry if I rambled. Great hub kiddo, nice job.

What you're seeing is the truth. But this didn't happen overnight. In fact, this insatiable lust to self-destruct has been going on since the emergence of humankind. The only difference is the toys have become more sophisticated and we've found more defense mechanisms to justify our own annhilation. What I'm seeing is more people dropping out. Saving themselves, you might say, from the jaws of a power they cannot control. I've dropped out. I don't miss the ways of the world one bit.

Seeing with another person's eyes, listening with another person's ears, seeing the hurt, hearing the pain, these are the things that make us human, make us caring.

And, as Lynda said above, we need also to see the child whose life is filled with a mother's love, a young person embracing another in love, an old couple shuffleing along holding hands like two young lovers, a beautiful flower growing in a crack in the concrete.

These things also are true and valuable.

Thanks so much for sharing this intelligent and moving Hub.

A wonderfully written hub. Of course, all of the things you have mentioned are true of today's society. I do think, though, as some others have mentioned, that there is much good in the world as well. Sometimes we just need to adopt a different perspective. Let me share with you a story which happened to me a couple of years ago as we were returning from a holiday in Croatia. Due to a mixture of bad organisation and congested traffic, the coach we were on missed the check in for the flight and the captain refused to wait. The journey to the airport had been horrendous and we had a child with us. We had also pretty much spent all our money. We were told we could go back to Split (back through the awful traffic in 35 degree heat(v. hot for us!) and we could fly again tomorrow. We would have to pay though, and recoup the expenses later. Our son could not bear that idea so the only other option was to pay for flights home and claim it back when we got home. It was going to be pretty expensive as the only available flight was going to Luton, not Gatwick, where our car was parked. Altogether gettng home cost us around £400. We were deliberating whether we could afford this unforeseen expense, and overhead by two of our fellow passengers, whom we had never met. A retired couple offered to lend us the money for the flights and a young man who lived about 200 miles away from us offered to lend us his credit card complete with pin number. We didn't accept either of these very generous offers, but my faith in human kindness was very much restored. It just goes to show that sometimes, when we look deeper, there is still much to admire in society after all.

Ann Nonymous profile image

Ann Nonymous Hub Author 2 years ago

Wow...Polly what an AMAZIING story! I am so glad yo shared it with me!

I do see the good in the world, trust me, and I am glad these fellow hubbers are pointing it out. It's just that for those who only see good, living their sweet "penthouse" life and not knowing what is going on in the real world, well this is it!

Everyday I thank God for my wonderful life and those that are in it and I try to say I love my life thanks to Him...but I also try to think of those less fortunate than me or the many hurting people out there...and still I sometimes forget or neglect to help!

Thanks so much for your incredible insight, Polly as it was a tremendous input to this hub!

Thanks for reading and commenting and do come again!

This is great- what the world has become and all the people in it are in a maze. Most people never stop to think, this isnt the way that things have to be- look for what really matters and hold onto that, rather than buying yourself a new nose or trying to be beautiful for the world-rather than yourself. Thanks for sharing

foreignpress 2 years ago

Polly C., and Annie Non:

There is good in the world. And Polly's encounter in Croatia is an example. But these acts of kindness are increasingly becoming islands in a sea of self-indulgence. Sometimes I ask myself "Why do we get up in the morning?" The answer is to make money and to further our own selfish ends. When, in fact, we should greet each day with a vow to help one another especially those who have nothing. That would be God's way. But those who have, choose to pursue a life in the opposite direction. Is this a diversion? An attempt to steer us away from the ultimate good? I think so. And by whom -- or what? Considering we are made in the image of God, we have the power to create good and evil on earth. We have chosen the latter.

Ann Nonymous profile image

Ann Nonymous Hub Author 2 years ago

Hello again ForeignPress....I see your point of view and realize what you are trying to say...

The thing is that the world has become a sea of humanity that are collectively seekers of pleasure. Just as God's prophets prophisied. The love of money, and all things materialistic do more than not drive us to pursue in life.

But if we seek the Kingdom of God first, seek JOY instead of happiness we will be better off. That won't change the circumstances around us all at once but we can start with ourselves and make a chain reaction of change by God' grace happen!

I hope I made a little sense in my rambling!

Wow Ann, this is so powerful and moving, true and very sad. You're right in what you say, it's so sad that the world is this way. Some of the things I see on the news today I just cannot believe and sadly I don't think they will get any better, there just seems to be more and more people wanting to hurt other people. However my nextdoor neighbour cut my grass for me the other day, and put my rubbish out on bin day. Which was a nice. I also helped a very old lady cross the road the other day and gave up my seat for an old man on the bus, I hope that cheers you up a bit Ann, nice stories :)

I'm bookmarking this one and rating up! Great work Ann as always :)

Hello sophs! You know what? I should have added that I know I can count on my hubbers to make this world a better place! That was really nice what your neighbor did for you. and so sweet of you to help the elderly! You go girl!

When I first moved into this neighborhood there was a kind gentlemen who always mowed both his and his wifes's yard and then since our lawns touched finished up with mine. It' s a pleasure seeing these random acts of kindness and is the best start to offer help!

Thanks for your many great words of support! I appreciate and look forward to your comments, sophs..you never let me down! Have a wonderful day!
